PPC902CE101 3BHE028959R0101 is a power control board or communication input/output module produced by ABB. To protect the input from overvoltage conditions, 3 kΩ resistors are placed on each input path of the AD7124-4. This resistance value limits the current generated by 30 V DC overvoltage to less than 10 mA.

Consider the case of a 30 V voltage connection between AIN+ and AIN−. Looking in from AIN+, the 30 V voltage sees R1 (3 kΩ), followed by the internal ESD protection diode, followed by the 3 kΩ resistor seen from AIN3 facing out in parallel with the 3 kΩ resistor seen from AIN4 facing out. Ignore the internal ESD protection diode and AIN + and AIN - the total resistance between Ω Ω for 3 k + 3 k | | 3 k Ω Ω = 4.5 k. Thus, the current limit flowing through AD7124-4 is 30 V ÷ 4.5 kΩ = 6.7 mA.

RTD input

The circuit shown in Figure 1 can be connected to 2 -, 3 -, or 4-wire RTDS. The maximum measured resistance is 3.92 kΩ, so it is suitable for Pt100 and Pt1000 RTDS. Using current excitation, the resistance measurement is in ratio form between RTD and 3.92 kΩ precision reference resistance (RREF). As shown in Figure 3, the RTD measurements are made between AIN1 and AIN3, with REFIN1+ and REFIN1− used as the baseline inputs for the measurements. The excitation current is set as follows:

2-wire mode: Excitation only works on AIN0, set to 250μA.

3-wire mode: Excitation current on AIN0 and AIN4 is valid, each set to 100μA.

4-wire mode: Excitation on AIN0 only works, set to 250μA.
