To establish an order for the events associated with an action, perform the following steps:

1. In the module assembly diagram, select the component that you want to qualify. The component must have a WSDL interface; You cannot set an event ordering qualifier on a component that has a Java™ interface.

2. In the Properties view, click the Details TAB, which displays the interface and reference of the component. If you are trying to control the order associated with updating employee records, you can select the components used to control those updates and establish the order based on employee identification, which may be a name or number.

3. Expand the tree and select operations for the component's WSDL interface.

4. Click the qualifier, click Add, and then select the event sort from the list provided. The event ordering qualifier is added to the operation. When you select the qualifier, you can see its properties in the subordinate view.

5. Create or select a name for the group to which the operation belongs. Events of all operations in the same group are considered to be sorted together. Their order is different from the order of events that operate in other groups. Events with the same key value in the same group are guaranteed to be delivered in the order of arrival.

6. In the Properties for Qualifier Event Ordering view, click the form cell for the parameter name, and then select the relevant parameters from the list provided. These parameters are business objects or simple types.

7. Provide XPath expressions to identify simple types that will be used in the key. You can enter an XPath expression in the field provided, or you can select a form cell and click the ellipsis (...) Button to open the XPath Expression Builder wizard, which will help you through this process. Select only the business object properties, and the wizard will construct the XPath expression for you. Each row in the table forms the key. Each XPath expression should be evaluated as a simple type. The key value consists of one or more fields that you define in the table. Process events with the same key value in the same group (for example, employee number 1234 or room number 201) in the order in which the component receives the events.

8. If you want to add more parameters, click Add and repeat steps 5 and 6. If there are two or more properties in the key, the order is important. For example, suppose in the hotel example, the room number is represented as two fields, the floor number and the room number for that floor. You have created an order that allows you to lock the room in the event queue while you tidy up the room. In this way, you need to ensure that the qualifiers defined for renovate_room and reserve_room have the same order of room and floor fields as they do in the key definition table. Otherwise, the hotel staff will not be able to book Room 03 on the 8th floor until Room 08 on the 3rd floor is finished. If the parameters in the table are reversed, renovate_room gets the lock with the key value 0803 (Room 8 on the 3rd floor), but reserve_room interprets the lock as being applied to room 03 on the 8th floor. In this example, the floor number field in the key table must always precede the room number. You can use the directional buttons in the view to change the position of the selected field in the key.

9. Processing errors or unavailable resources can cause sorted events to fail. The handling of any remaining events in the order is determined by the event ordering qualifier's Handle Request when an error is encountered check box. To control the handling of dependent events when sorted events fail, complete one of the following steps:

   • If you want to continue processing the order of events regardless of whether any event failed, make sure that the Handle Request when an error check box is selected.

   • If you want to suspend processing dependent events until sorted events that fail are resolved, clear the Handle Request when an error is encountered check box.

10. Save your changes in the assembly editor. You can change the parameter name or XPath expression at any time.
