I/O (Input/Output), or input/output, usually refers to the input and output of data between internal memory and external memory or other peripheral devices. Input/Output (I/O) is the communication between an information processing system (such as a calculator) and the outside world (possibly a human or another information processing system). The input is the signal or data received by the system, and the output is the signal or data sent from it. Communication devices between calculators, such as telecommunications modems and network cards, typically run input and output operations. The function of the I/O interface is responsible for the CPU through the system bus to connect the I/O circuit and peripheral devices together, according to the complexity of the circuit and equipment, the hardware of the I/O interface is mainly divided into two categories: (1) I/O interface chip Most of these chips are integrated circuits, input different commands and parameters through the CPU, and control the related I/O circuits and simple peripherals for corresponding operations, common interface chips such as timing counters, interrupt controllers, DMA controllers, parallel interfaces, etc. (2) I/O interface control card A number of integrated circuits are composed into a component according to a certain logic, or directly with the CPU on the motherboard, or a plug-in is inserted into the system bus slot. Information type mismatch: Different I/O devices use different signal types, some are digital signals, and some are analog signals, so the processing methods are different. For the above reasons, the data exchange between the CPU and peripherals must be done through the interface, which usually has the following functions: (1) Set the data storage, buffer logic to adapt to the speed difference between the CPU and peripherals, the interface is usually composed of some registers or RAM chips, if the chip is large enough can also achieve batch data transmission; (2) The ability to convert information formats, such as serial and parallel conversion; (3) Able to coordinate the difference between the CPU and peripherals in the type and level of information, such as level conversion drivers, digital-to-analog or analog-to-digital converters; (4) Coordination timing differences; (5) Address decoding and device selection functions; (6) Set up interrupt and DMA control logic to ensure that interrupt and DMA request signals are generated when the interrupt and DMA permit, and interrupt processing and DMA transmission are completed after receiving the interrupt and DMA reply.
