Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) is a high-power electrical component, also known as a thyristor. It has the advantages of small size, high efficiency and long life. Thyristors are divided into two kinds: unidirectional thyristors and bidirectional thyristors. Bidirectional thyristor is also called TRIAC, or TRIAC for short. The bidirectional thyristor is structurally equivalent to two unidirectional thyristors in reverse connection, and this thyristor has a dual pilot pass function. Its on-off state is determined by the control pole G. Adding a positive pulse (or negative pulse) to the control pole G can make it forward (or reverse) conduction. The advantage of this device is that the control circuit is simple and there is no reverse voltage problem, so it is particularly suitable for AC contactless switch use. Thyristor has many advantages, such as: to control high power with small power, power amplification up to hundreds of thousands of times; The response is extremely fast, opening and closing in microseconds; No contact operation, no spark, no noise; High efficiency, low cost and so on. The weakness of thyristor: static and dynamic overload capacity is poor; Easily misled by interference. Thyristor characteristics "Hair-trigger". However, if the anode or the control pole is applied with a reverse voltage, the thyristor cannot be switched on. The function of the control pole is to make the thyristor open by applying a forward trigger pulse, but it cannot be turned off. So, what method can be used to make the conducting thyristor shut off? The switched thyristor can be turned off by either disconnecting the anode power supply (switch S in Figure 3) or making the anode current less than the minimum to maintain the conduction (called the maintenance current). If an AC voltage or a fluctuating DC voltage is applied between the anode and cathode of the thyristor, the thyristor will shut itself off when the voltage crosses zero. Characteristics of thyristors (1) bidirectional conductivity Thyristors have bidirectional conductivity, that is, they can conduct current at both forward and reverse voltages. This allows thyristors to be used in AC and DC circuits to achieve bidirectional current control. (2) Switching characteristics The thyristor has the switching characteristic, that is, under the action of the control voltage, it switches from the off state to the on state. Once the thyristor is switched on, it remains switched on until the current drops to zero or is disconnected by an external control. This switching characteristic enables the thyristor to realize efficient current switching control in the circuit. (3) Trigger control The on-state of the thyristor can be controlled by triggering the current. When enough current is applied by the Gate, the thyristor switches from the off state to the on state. This trigger control allows the thyristor to precisely control the on-off of the current in the circuit. (4) High current and voltage tolerance Thyristors can withstand considerable current and voltage. This makes it suitable for high power circuits and power control systems, such as motor control, power converter and other fields. (5) Fast switching speed The thyristor has a fast switching speed and can be switched from the off state to the on state in a nanosecond. This makes it suitable for high frequency applications such as variable frequency speed control systems. (6) Stability and reliability The switching and control of thyristor is based on physical principle, so it has high stability and reliability. It is not susceptible to external interference or temperature changes. (7) Energy saving and efficiency Because of the fast switching speed of thyristors, fast current switching can be realized in the circuit, thus reducing energy loss and improving the efficiency of the circuit.
