The REF620 is a dedicated feeder relay perfectly aligned for the protection, control, measurement and supervision of utility substations and industrial power systems. REF620 is a member of ABB’s Relion® family and a part of its 620 protection and control product series. The 620 series A are characterized by flexibility and performance for demanding utility distribution and industrial applications. Engineered from the ground up, the 620 series has been designed to unleash the full potential of the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation devices. It offers support for singlebreaker, one-and-half breaker and double breaker feeder configurations. Flexible order coding allows for choosing current-onlyor current-and-voltage configurations to best fit your distributionfeeder application needs. The REF620 is the most powerful, advanced and simplestfeeder protection relay in its class, perfectly offering time andinstantaneous overcurrent, negative sequence overcurrent,phase step distance, phase discontinuity, breaker failure, thermal overload, and voltage metering and protection. The relayalso features high impedance fault (HIZ) and sensitive earthfault (SEF) protection for grounded and ungrounded distribution systems. Also, the relay incorporates a flexible three-phasemulti-shot auto-reclose function for automatic feeder restorationin temporary faults on overhead lines.
Enhanced with safety options, the relay offers a three-channelarc-fault detection system for supervision of the switchgear. TheREF620 also integrates basic control functionality, which facilitates the control of up to 2 circuit breakers via the relay’s frontpanel human machine interface (HMI) or remote control system.To protect the relay from unauthorized access and to maintainthe integrity of information, the relay has been provided with afour-level, role-based user authentication system, with individualpasswords for the viewer, operator, engineer, and administratorlevels. The access control system applies to the front panelHMI, embedded web browser based HMI, and thePCM600, Protection and Control IED Manager. REF620 genuinely supports the new IEC 61850 standard forinter-device communication in substations. The relay also supports the industry standard DNP3 and Modbus® protocols. Foraccurate time stamping, REM620 supports synchronization overEthernet using SNTP or over a separate bus using IRIG-B. Standard configurations The REF620 relay main application is feeder protection andcontrol and offers three standard configurations whose relayfunctions and features are based on the needs of the application.
