The REF615 is a dedicated feeder relay perfectly aligned for the protection, control, measurement, and supervision of utility substations and industrial power systems. REF615 is a member of ABB’s Relion® family and a part of its 615 protection and control product series. The 615 series ANSI are characterized by their compactness and withdrawable design. Engineered from the ground up, the 615 series has been designed to unleash the full potential of the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation devices. REF615 is a dedicated feeder protection andcontrol relay designed for the protection,control, measurement and supervision ofutility substations and industrial powersystems including radial, looped and mesheddistribution networks with or withoutdistributed power generation. REF615 is amember of ABB’s Relion ® product family andpart of its 615 protection and control productseries. The 615 series relays are characterizedby their compactness and withdrawable-unitdesign. Re-engineered from the ground up, the 615series has been designed to unleash thefull potential of the IEC 61850 standard forcommunication and interoperability betweensubstation automation devices. The relay provides main protection foroverhead lines and cable feeders in distributionnetworks. The relay is also used as backup protection in applications, where anindependent and redundant protection systemis required. Depending on the chosen standardconfiguration, the relay is adapted forthe protection of overhead line and cablefeeders in isolated neutral, resistance earthed,compensated and solidly earthed networks.Once the standard configuration relay has beengiven the application-specific settings, it candirectly be put into service. The 615 series relays support a range ofcommunication protocols including IEC 61850with Edition 2 support, process bus accordingto IEC 61850-9-2 LE, IEC 60870-5-103, Modbus®and DNP3. Profibus DPV1 communicationprotocol is supported by using the protocolconverter SPA-ZC 302.
REF615 is available with twelve alternativestandard configurations. The standard signalconfiguration can be altered by meansof the signal matrix or the graphicalapplication functionality of the Protectionand Control IED Manager PCM600. Further,the application configuration functionality ofPCM600 supports the creation of multi-layerlogic functions using various logical elements,including timers and flip-flops. By combiningprotection functions with logic function blocks,the relay configuration can be adapted touserspecific application requirements. The relay is delivered from the factory withdefault connections described in the functionaldiagrams for binary inputs, binary outputs,function-to-function connections and alarmLEDs. Some of the supported functions inREF615 must be added with the ApplicationConfiguration tool to be available in the SignalMatrix tool and in the relay. The positivemeasuring direction of directional protectionfunctions is towards the outgoing feeder.
