The REF615 is a dedicated feeder relay perfectly aligned for the protection, control, measurement, and supervision of utility substations and industrial power systems. REF615 is a member of ABB’s Relion® family and a part of its 615 protection and control product series. The 615 series ANSI are characterized by their compactness and withdrawable design. Engineered from the ground up, the 615 series has been designed to unleash the full potential of the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation devices. REF615 is a dedicated feeder IED (intelligentelectronic device) designed for the protection,control, measurement and supervision of utilitysubstations and industrial power systemsincluding radial, looped and meshed distributionnetworks with or without distributed powergeneration. REF615 is a member of ABB’sRelion® product family and part of its 615protection and control product series. The 615series IEDs are characterized by theircompactness and withdrawable-unit design. Re-engineered from the ground up, the 615 serieshas been designed to unleash the full potential ofthe IEC 61850 standard for communication andinteroperability between substation automationdevices. The IED provides main protection for overheadlines and cable feeders in distribution networks.The IED is also used as back-up protection inapplications, where an independent andredundant protection system is required. Depending on the chosen standard configuration,the IED is adapted for the protection of overheadline and cable feeders in isolated neutral,resistance earthed, compensated and solidlyearthed networks. Once the standardconfiguration IED has been given the applicationspecific settings, it can directly be put into service. The 615 series IEDs support a range ofcommunication protocols including IEC 61850with GOOSE messaging, IEC 60870-5-103,Modbus® and DNP3.
REF615 is available in nine alternative standardconfigurations. The standard signal configurationcan be altered by means of the graphical signalmatrix or the graphical application functionality ofthe Protection and Control IED Manager PCM600.Further, the application configuration functionalityof PCM600 supports the creation of multi-layerlogic functions using various logical elements,including timers and flip-flops. By combiningprotection functions with logic function blocks,the IED configuration can be adapted to userspecific application requirements. The IED offers directional and non-directionalovercurrent and thermal overload protection aswell as directional and non-directional earth-faultprotection. Some standard configurations allowas an option admittance-based, harmonics-basedor wattmetric-based earth-fault protection to beused in addition to directional earth-faultprotection. Further, the IED features sensitiveearth-fault protection, phase discontinuityprotection, transient/intermittent earth-faultprotection, overvoltage and undervoltageprotection, residual overvoltage protection,positive-sequence undervoltage and negativesequence overvoltage protection. Frequencyprotection, including overfrequency,underfrequency and frequency rate-of-changeprotection, is offered in IEDs with standardconfigurations H and J. The IED also incorporatesoptional three-pole multi-shot auto-reclosefunctions for overhead line feeders. Enhanced with optional hardware and software,the IED also features three light detectionchannels for arc fault protection of the circuitbreaker, busbar and cable compartment of metalenclosed indoor switchgear. The arc-fault protection sensor interface isavailable on the optional communication module.Fast tripping increases staff safety and securityand limits material damage in an arc fault situation.
