REM610 is a motor protection relay for the protection, measurement and supervision of medium-sized and large asynchronous LV motors and small and medium-sized asynchronous HV motors in the manufacturing and process industry. REM610 is a member of ABB’s Relion® product family and part of its 610 product series. The series includes protection relays for feeders, motors and for general system voltage supervision. The plug-in design facilitates the commissioning of the switchgear and enables fast and safe insertion and withdrawal of relay plug-in units. These protection relays can be used with both circuit-breaker and contactor-controlled motor drives in a variety of applications. As these relays are enhanced with an optional add-on card for RTD sensors or thermistor elements, they can be used for direct temperature measurement of critical motor items, such as bearings and windings. They are also used for the protection of cable feeders and distribution transformers, benefiting from thermal overload protection on top of the phase over-current protection, earth-fault protection and phase unbalance protection. The key features of the motor IED include thermal overload protection, cumulative motor startup supervision, running stall protection, earth-fault protection, and loss-of-phase protection. Further, the 610 series protection relaysare suitable for employment in marine and offshoreenvironments. The numerical motor protection relays of the 610 series supporta wide range of standard communication protocols, amongthem the IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-103, Modbus, Profibus, LONand SPA communication protocols.
The protection relay offers many integrated protection functionsfor the protection of motors. The thermal overload protection,cumulative motor start up supervision, running stall protection,earth-fault protection and loss-of-phase are the key functionsof this protection relay. The coverage of the thermal overloadprotection can be further enhanced by means of an optionalRTD module for direct temperature measurement. The protection relay physically measures the phase currentsand the residual current. From the phase currents, theprotection relay calculates the thermal overload and thenegative-phase-sequence current of the protected motor orgenerator. REM610 also measures a number of characteristiccurrents of the protected object during startup and dutyoperation. Further, by means of an optional measurement card,the protection relay can directly measure up to eighttemperatures via six RTD and two thermistor type sensors. The values measured can be accessed locally via the userinterface on the protection relay's front panel or remotely via theserial communication interface on the rear panel of theprotection relay. The protection relay is provided with a built-in battery backedup digital disturbance recorder for four analog signal channelsand eight digital signal channels. The analog channels can beset to record the curve form of the currents measured. Thedigital channels can be set to record external or internal relaysignals, for example the start or trip signals of protection relay'sstages, external blocking or control signals. Any digital relaysignal such as a protection start or trip signal, or an externalrelay control signal can be set to trigger the recording. Therecordings are stored in a nonvolatile memory from which thedata can be uploaded for subsequent fault analysis.
