OVERVIEW The HART Communication Redundant OutputInterface Module (FBM218) contains eight channelisolated output channels. The FBM218 supports anymix of standard 4 to 20 mA devices and HARTdevices. A pair of the modules combines to provideredundancy at the Fieldbus Module (FBM) level, withfield outputs wired to one common terminationassembly. In this configuration, oneFBM218 is the Master, and the other is the Tracker. The FBM218 serves as a HART communications fielddevice host, enabling the I/A Series system torequest and receive two digital messages per secondfrom each field device. The message pass-through capability can be used tosupport HART universal, common practice, anddevice-specific commands, but not the burstcommunication mode. These commands areimplemented using the Intelligent Field DeviceConfigurator (IFDC — refer to PSS 21S-8A2 B3 fordetails). REDUNDANT ANALOG OUTPUTS If a failure is detected in one of the modules, itsoutput is driven to 0 mA and the correspondingchannel in the good module automatically continuessupplying the proper current to the output currentloop. Each output channel drives an external load andproduces a 0 to 20 mA output. Outputs arecombined in series through the redundant adapter.The microprocessor of each module executes theanalog I/O application program, plus security routinesthat validate the health of the FBM. Configurable options in the modules for outputsecurity include Fail-Safe Action (Hold/Fallback),Analog Output Fail-Safe Fallback Data (on a perchannel basis), Fieldbus Fail-Safe Enable, andFieldbus Fail-Safe Delay Time. The Analog OutputFail-Safe Fallback Data option must be set for 0 mAoutput. This removes one of the pair of redundantoutput channels from service for detectable problemssuch as a module not properly receiving outputwrites or not passing security tests on FBMmicroprocessor writes to output registers. Setting ofthe Analog Output Fail-Safe Fallback Data option for0 mA output also minimizes the possibility of a “failhigh” result.
