Enhanced IntelligentCommunication Module The Model 4119A Enhanced IntelligentCommunication Module (EICM)allows the Tricon to communicate withModbus masters and slaves, TriStation1131, and printers. For Modbus connections, the EICMuser can select the RS-232 point-topoint interface for one master and oneslave, or the RS-485 interface for onemaster and up to 32 slaves. The RS-485network trunk can be one or twotwisted-pair wires up to a maximum of4,000 feet (1,200 meters). Each EICM contains four serial portsand one parallel port which can operateconcurrently. Each serial port can beconfigured as a Modbus master with upto seven Modbus masters per Triconchassis. A single Tricon systemsupports a maximum of two EICMs,which must reside in one logical slot.(The hot-spare feature is not availablefor the EICM, though you can replace afaulty EICM while the controller isonline.) Each serial port is uniquelyaddressed and supports either theModbus or TriStation interface.
Modbus communication can beperformed in either RTU or ASCIImode. The parallel port provides aCentronics interface to a printer.
Each EICM supports an aggregate datarate of 57.6 kilobits per second (for allfour serial ports).
Programs for the Tricon use variablenames as identifiers but Modbusdevices use numeric addresses calledaliases. Therefore an alias must beassigned to each Tricon variable namethat will be read by or written to aModbus device. An alias is a five-digitnumber which represents the Modbusmessage type and the address of thevariable in the Tricon. An alias numberis assigned in TriStation 1131.
Any standard Modbus device cancommunicate with the Tricon throughthe EICM, provided that aliases areassigned to the Tricon variables. Aliasnumbers must also be used when hostcomputers access the Tricon throughother communication modules, such asthe NCM.
